A teleradiologist is a licensed radiologist who interprets studies from a place that is not the scanner — night coverage, overflow, a subspecialty read for a site that does not have that person in the building. Same job as on-site: look, dictate, sign. Different pipe. It is not the workforce-shortage article. It is not “AI radiology.” It is not a PYCAD staffing product.
If you meant why the inbox is full → shortage of radiologists (581 already points here as the role URL). If you meant what a model actually does on a study → artificial intelligence in radiology. If you meant the file and the archive → PACS and DICOM.
Teleradiology moves a reader. It does not create one. 581 says that; this page is the role. PYCAD builds custom web DICOM viewers and imaging models. It is not a teleradiology company and not a locums desk.
What the role is
| Mode | What is being bought | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Nighthawk | After-hours prelims (often ED / inpatient) so the local list is not empty at 02:00 | A replacement for a daytime roster. Prelims still get a final |
| Overflow | Daytime volume the local group cannot clear | A new FTE. The study still needs a signer |
| Subspecialty | A neuroradiologist or MSK reader for a site that does not employ one | A generalist who “has a viewer” |
| Access | A rural or small hospital that has a scanner and no one to read it | A WHO census. Geography is the shortage’s other half — 581 |
Credentials are not optional because the reader is at home. In the US the usual rule is: licensed in the state of the patient, privileged at the facility, and working on a diagnostic-quality display. Other countries have their own boards and data-residency rules. A “telehealth jobs” affiliate is not a licence. Dropped.
The pipe (not the person)
The person is a radiologist. The pipe is four pieces that already have URLs:
- DICOM — the file and the network language. Without it the pixels and the patient tags do not travel together.
- PACS — where the study lives so a remote workstation can open it. PACS and DICOM is that pair.
- RIS / worklist — who is assigned, prelim vs final, the clock. Not this page.
- A diagnostic viewer — hang, window, priors, a report field. A consumer JPEG viewer is not this. Custom web viewers are a thing PYCAD actually builds; they are not a telerad service.
The study is large. The link has to be encrypted (VPN / TLS) and covered by a BAA where HIPAA applies. How files move without becoming a Dropbox story is HIPAA-compliant data transfer, not a second role explainer.
What the role does not fix
- Headcount. A remote reader is still a reader. Residencies are the supply dial — 581.
- A model that signs. Assistive AI can flag; the teleradiologist still signs. 5644 is that job. “AI partnership” as a staffing plan was the old page’s closer. Dropped as a claim.
- Licensure arbitrage. Reading a US study from another country does not delete the US licence and privilege problem. Treat vendor “global coverage” slides as sales until counsel says otherwise.
What this page is not
- Not 581 restated with a “tele-” costume. That URL is why there are not enough signers. This one is who the remote signer is.
- Not 5644. A mark on a study is not a teleradiologist.
- Not
/portfolio. Named work is case studies. - Not a PYCAD teleradiology network, a nighthawk marketplace, or a “command center” SKU.
If the missing piece is a web viewer the remote reader can actually hang a study in, that is the imaging piece. It is not a radiologist. Case studies.
